If you are shopping around online for a new Mini Split Air Conditioner, Mini Split Heat Pump, or Split AC System in general, you have probably come across an abundance of Ductless Air Conditioning models that claim to come with “everything you need to install the Split System.” An obvious component of any Split System Air Conditioning is going to be that conduit tube which holds the refrigerant lines. One of the aspects which may really have you wondering if you will really need that HVAC technician to come out are those often included “pre-charged” refrigerant lines. Manufacturers and distributers of Ductless Mini Split will often explain that the refrigerant lines are pre-charged with R-410A refrigerant, which may give the impression that the lines are good to go, or DIY. But it is erroneous to assume that the pre-charged line of your Mini Split Air Conditioning or Ductless Heating and Cooling will not require the tools and knowledge of a professional Minisplit and Heat Pump System technician. While the Heating and Cooling Units manufacturer or online dealer is (hopefully) not intentionally deceiving you, the idea of a “pre-charged” line may be a little misleading, as one of the main things your HVAC professional will be doing is “charging the line.” In fact, most of the Best Air Conditioner Units refrigerant lines that are installed by professional ac are, in fact, pre-charged with a quantity of refrigerant (typically, 13 to 16 feet).
Although this is the typical amount of refrigerant added to many Mini Split Heat compressors, there really is no “typical” amount of refrigerant that will ensure proper functioning of a Mini Split Heat system. First off, remember that the line sets you receive with your Mini Split Heat won’t necessarily be the length of line set that you actually use for installation; one of the customizable attributes of Mini Split Heat air conditioning is the flexibility of where you will install the Mini Split Heat compressor, which can make the length of line used quite variable. And there really isn’t a standard volume of refrigerant involved, only a set pressure, which can alsovary with conditions. So, regardless of what line set length you end up using, the amount of refrigerant will have to be regulated and checked to ensure the proper pressure settings. Therefore, the pre-charged line does not in any way ensure that you can hook up the copper line set and expect the equipment to operate properly.
So, it is typical that an installer called to install a Mini Split Heat begins with a line set that has some quantity of refrigerant pre-loaded in the compressor. After the distance and configuration of the Mini Split Heat system is in place, the installer hooks up gauges to measure the current pressure within the lines. The installer than increases or decreases the amount of refrigerant in the lines, in order to attain a proper pressure reading, as incorrect pressures will result in poor performance or failure of your air conditioning system. This is generally not something you can do without proper training, regulations, and a license, as refrigerant leakage could pose a hazard to both you and your environment.
Another thing to recognize is that, typical refrigerant lines need to be vacuumed of any contamination that may have entered prior to charging. This is another handy trick of the HVAC trade; the technician has tools that allow him/her to quickly carry out this task, as well as monitor if anything has gone wrong.
Although some Mini Split Heat merchants may say that it is possible to install these “pre-charged” systems all by yourself, this is certainly not the preferable method, and Mini Split Heat generally require professional assistance for the tasks that have been mentioned here. Again, they are not lying…indeed, if you possess the tools and skills of an HVAC pro, you can certainly do it yourself. The same can be said of an auto mechanic, a five-star chef, or a brain surgeon (provided you do not intend on operating on yourself!) Because these Mini Split are intended by the manufacturers to be professionally HVAC installed, you won’t find many (if any) warrantees that cover a Mini Split unit that you have attempted to install yourself. So, an added risk that you incur, even if you have trained yourself in HVAC and have access to all of the tools you may need, is that the Mini Split it self may arrive defective and you have no recourse.
A truly do-it-yourself Mini Split would have to be designed with technology in mind that removes the need for vacuuming and ensures proper pressure on the lines. It would need to have self-regulating mechanisms in place to either self-solve problems that may arise, or avoid them altogether. To top it off, a truly DIY installed Mini Split would be promoted as such by the manufacturer directly, and would come equipped with a warrantee that honored the fact that this installation would be treated more like a plug-and-play, and would not require professional installation inorder to be honored in the case of a defect.
There is at least one Mini Split that has achieved true DIY installation status by addressing all of these pitfalls. The refrigerant line system of the Mini Split is vacuumed at the warehouse prior to charging, so no vacuuming required. Rather than “pre-charging the line,” the compressor is loaded with refrigerant and contained with specialized“quick-lock” connector fittings. Mean while, the line set is pre-attached to the indoor evaporator of the Mini Split. When the line is connected (by the user, not a technician) at the locked fitting of the condenser, the line is charged with refrigerant, and ready to go.
But, how is this different then apre-charged line? Doesn’t the pressure of the line still need to be tested? No, because the entire 25’ stainless steel line is charged with refrigerant. The stainless steel line set has the advantage over other Split Heat line sets in that it is less prone to leaks than the copper lines. So, because the entire line set will be filled with refrigerant, proper pressure within the lines is no longer anissue; the downside to this is the limitation on how many feet of line set is available to set distance between the evaporator and compressor of the Split Heat.
So, although many manufacturers and online distributers may taut incredible ease of installation, and even sell kits to help you put your Mini Heating in on your own, it may not always be the best idea. Even if you can get away with the majority of the installation (i.e.: the drilling, mounting, and configuration) on your own, you will usually need an HVAC installer for the “dirty work” such as the electrical, and charging and gauging the refrigerant lines. For one, it maybe illegal to do so, as an open refrigerant line may pose a risk to you or the environment. Also, you may not be able to get customer support easily, should you encounter a problem. There is also the risk that if you encounter a problem (or simply have a defective Mini Heating), you may void the warrantee on a machine not intended for DIY installation, if you attempt to install it on your own.
However, there is at least one Mini Heating on the market that has undergone some adaptations to the installation procedure, in order to introduce itself as a truly “install yourself” Mini Heating. ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR MINI SPLIT INSTALLATION
Before you purchase any make or model of Split System Heat, be sure that you are aware of the voltage requirements in the manufacturer’s specifications. Smaller capacity Split System Heat air conditioners may only require 110 volts, which may not require much modification to your home wiring, as standard outlets in which you plug your TV and other appliances, inthe United States, are typically 110 volts. However, expectanything over 12,000 BTU (1 ton of air conditioning capacity) to require 220 volts, which may require some electrical upgrade.

Another major thing to keep in mind is that the Split Unit needs to have a designated breaker in the electrical box. So, makesure there is room in the box for a dual pole circuit breaker that will be for the Split Unit air conditioner alone. The circuit break must also be of appropriate size for the Split Unit you have chosen. A dual pole 20 amp circuit breaker will be sufficient for most Split Unit systems with capacity of up to 24,000 BTU (2 ton Split Unit.)

MINISPLIT RESCUE: ICY EVAPORATOR

And that’s it. After all the ice has melted, the unit should resume proper function. If the problem recurs very quickly, you might consider calling in an HVAC technician to further assess the problem.
MINI SPLIT HEAT PUMPS OFFER ADVANTAGES OVER ELECTRIC HEAT
A Heating - Mini Split that also “includes a ductless heat pump” simply means that the Heating - Mini Split is equipped with a reverse valve which can trigger the refrigerant cycle to work in the same way it does to cool, except backwards. Because, a Heating - Mini Split is actually already a “ductless heat pump”, it is just generally absorbing the heat from indoors and pumping it out, to keep your inside spaces cool (free of heat) throughout the summer time. Reverse this process, and the Heating - Mini Split begins gathering the ambient warmth of the outdoor compressor, and pumping it back in. That is really the only difference between a Heating - Mini Split with “cooling only” functionality, and Heating - Mini Split “with a heat pump”: the reverse valve.
And it just so happens that, with all of the efficiency that today’s Heating System have to brag about, ductless heat pumps can do the same. Heat pumps are actually a far more efficient and energy conscious way to warm an interior space than electrical heating, which often requires more power for even less output. The ductless heat pump function (of Heating System that have them) benefits from all of the same technology that makes Heating System such efficient coolers, and the efficiency during heating seasons turns out to be very similar to that of cooling.
Ductless heat pumps are a much more passive way to heat a home than to warm it up with electricity like a toaster. Rather, it exploits the same mechanics and chemistry that air conditioning does; power is used to move refrigerant along a track, and to power the blowers which circulate the air modified by the het-absorbing liquid refrigerant.
If you are already planning on installing a Heating System, there are no added expenses(other than purchasing a slightly more expensive unit which incorporates are verse valve) to add the functionality of a ductless heat pump to a space that will ever require heating. This makes a Heating System with heat pump a great solution for a room addition or bonus room which requires both heating and cooling.
The only real disadvantage of a ductless heat pump has, which is not an issue with electrical heat, is their inability of some of the older models to easily function at very cool temperatures. At around 19 degrees Fahrenheit, the operation of a ductless heat pump usually starts to dissipate. When a condenseris exposed to very cold outdoor temperatures, the refrigeration in the compressor can freeze. Because the heat pump works by gathering the ambient heat around the compressor, this presented a problem for ductless heat pumps. So, in very, very cold climates, Heating System with ductless heat pumps have not always provided an ideal solution for interior warmth. However, some people still managed to get around this weakness of ductless heat pumps, by utilizing supplementary warming devices (such as crank case heaters) in order to keep their compressors warm during the colder months.
Many of the newer Heating System on the market have resolved this problem with advanced inverter technology, etc., which have brought the minimal operational temperature of their heat pumps down, significantly. The average seems to be around 5 degrees; although the ductless heat pumps on Mitsubishi Heating System can operate at as low as -13 Farenhiet. With the addition of ductless heat pumps, Heating System technology seems to be well on its way to providing us with year-round, efficient comfort.
